Playing as Zenyatta
Zen's orbs require line of sight to stay active, that goes for team mates as well as enemies.
Zennyatta's ultimate is a perfect counter for a lot of ultimate. It can negate Reaper's death blossom, or pharah's Air barrage.
Both orbs will disappear if you loose sight of your target for 3 seconds.
Playing Zenyatta is not about either doing damage or healing, you need to do both. If there is a target available for either of your orbs, use it, prioritizing the most hurt allies for the heal and the most threatening enemy for the damage.
Do you know that a well-aimed full charged right click- + orb of discord on some heroes can one shot them ? (Reaper, hanzo, Widowmaker, etc)
Dont overestimate a Winston. With Discord and headshots, Zenyatta can easily kill a charging Winston before he gets close enough to kill you.
Try to encourage Winston to be overly cocky and charge at you. If he uses his shield or leaps, then your chances of the kill are incredibly reduced. Engage him in corners in case he leaps, and try to give the Winston a false sense of security---shoot him in the body without discord to make him think he can easily kill you without having to use his abilities, then pop discord and starting aiming for his head on prove him wrong! :)
Due to the most recent Zenyatta nerf, his Discord orb now adds 30% more damage to the effected target.
(pre-nerf, discord = 50% damage increase)
Don't forget to communicate with your teammate when your orb is on a opponent and you know where he is.
Zenyatta's shots are projectiles. He is NOT hitscan, so you will need to lead you shots on strafing enemies.
Did you know you got a right click ? Hold it and charge a multiple shot.
Zen has very low life, he can be one-shot by any sniper easily. Positioning here is the key.
Practice your precision to be truly effective and reserve the secondary fire with stationary enemies. For the rest of the game, you'll get more damage with the standard fire.
Keep your orb of discord on the enemy teams supports, they will either get killed quickly or have to hide, limiting their healing abilities.
Don't be afraid to use your ult often (not all the time though) to help your team win small fights. This is because it charges fast due to Zen's active role in battle.
Your M2 charge is great for trying to take out that Widow or Hanzo that is standing still. It should not be used on anything else. The DPS for you M1 is far better. If you happen to miss a M2 charge then you wasted about 5 seconds of possible DPS.
Orb of discord boosts all sources of damage by 50%.
Never you your ult on little groups, save it so when in a big group, you have 4-5, instead of 2-3 healed. You would be shocked by people who do this, like the Dead Eye power charge, never solo ult.
Playing with Zenyatta
Zenyatta can, and will, make your enemies melt instantly from your damage and help keep you alive at the same time. But he needs protection and he's slow, so don't scatter around an objective and leave him on it alone.
Stick to him when he use his ultimate.
Don't wait for zenyatta to heal you. Stay close to him, and ask him for heal. They are easily distracted during the fights.
While Zenyatta's Ult has an insane about of healing per second, it is still a healing per second mechanic. Therefore, some enemy ults can still kill his teammates even if he is ult'ing right next to you. D.Va's ult is a prime example of this.
If you are the Reinhardt on the team, think of Zen as your little brother. He needs you to keep that shield up so he doesn't get one shot. Don't go man mode against everyone unless Zen is not in danger, or dead.
It's not a bad idea to have another support character play with Zenyatta. Symmetra can give him shields to stop a little more damage while using her turrets to give him a safe place to retreat, and Mercy can assist in healing as her healing staff heals 50 health per second while Zenyatta only heals 30 health per second. But Zenyatta shines in helpimg his team by lightning up enemies with his discord orb, combine that with his damage and he can make a oretty scary character to fight, and even a 1v1 with a good and accurate Zenyatta can be scary as he can do lots of damage with the right orbs.
Zenyatta becomes a big glowing thing with rays shooting out of it that looks like it's going to explode like D.Va's mech; but it will actually make you nigh invincible, so don't run away from it.
Playing against Zenyatta
A Roadhog can hook an Ult'ing Zenyatta out of range, so he cannot heal his allies.
The big sparkly glowy guy with arms may look like a good target to shoot when he lights up for his ultimate, but in reality he will take no damage, and ends up healing anybody near him as well. Try to distance him from his team when he does this ability, potentially with an ability like Mei's Ice Wall.
Orb of Discord will make you take 50% extra damage from all sources, making you very vulnerable to everything. But he needs line of sight on you to keep the orb there, and it will be automatically removed from you after 3 seconds if he can't see you.
Certain abilities can instantly remove a discord orb. (Tracer's Recall, Mei's ice block, Reaper's shadow strike, Zarya's shield, etc.)
Zenyatta is capable of placing orbs upon teammates, but also upon enemies. If you've been hitten with the Orb of Discord, prepare to take cover if you notice multiple enemies around.
